Our (not in any way the professionals )
Simple Tie Dye Shirt Walk Thru
1. Soak and Ring it.
Dampen any shirt you want to use by letting it soak in salt water (I add a tbsp. per shirt in a basin) and then ringing it out really good, really, really good or the colors will run into one another and become a muddled mess when you dye it.
2. Map it.
You can find tutorials for mapping out your design on Pinterest or you can go "off-roading" like one of my girls did, with no map.
Side note#1- where those clothes you don't mind getting ruined while doing this craft.
3. Tie it or band it.
4. Dye it.
Stay in the "lines" of the rubberbands? Yes, as much as possible but I told the girls to keep in mind that it's supposed to be a "beautiful mess " kind of thing, so no need for fretting if one color runs into another one.

5. Bag it.
Let them soak overnight, for maximum results we did 24 hours.
6. Rinse it.
Rinse the dye out in sink until water runs clear.
7. Wash it by it self.
At least the first three times you wash these shirts they need to be alone, just to be safe.
And that's all we did. This shirt is after after two washes in the machine.
Is it perfect? No. Did we know what we were doing? Not really. Are my girls happy with their creations and already talking about more tie-dye projects? Yes, so it's a win-win for me, not to mention cheap-cheap. If you're already using a shirt you have and you have food coloring or Koolaid in your cupboard, you're set!!
